Our Personal, Social and Health education is covered in three cycles which are studied by all pupils across the academy. In term one pupils will focus on Mental and Physical Health, in term two we look at developing Healthy Relationships and in term three we concentrate on Citizenship. The curriculum for this program of study is taken from the tri-borough (Westminster, Hammersmith & Fulham, Kensington & Chelsea) guidance and adapted from the PSHE association recommendations. There is currently no national curriculum for PSHE which allows us to tailor our education to the needs of our pupils. Please see the PSHE policy and the curriculum document below which outline the pupils’ learning at each stage of the academy.
The Secondary Curriculum has been updated for the year ahead. Click to view.KSA Secondary PSHE Overview.docx
In each PSHE cycle we aim to have external visitors come and speak to the children about topical or sensitive issues. In the past we have welcomed visitors from the following organisations:
- Body Gossip
- Connect and Inspire
- Teenage Cancer Trust
- Educate and Celebrate
- Diversity Role Models (BP)
- Project Guardian (TfL)
- Metropolitan Police
- Yoga Bugs
Please see the below statement from the UK government on parental right to opt out of some aspects of PSHE (https://www.gov.uk/national-curriculum/other-compulsory-subjects): ‘Sex and relationship education (SRE) is compulsory from age 11 onwards. It involves teaching children about reproduction, sexuality and sexual health. It doesn’t promote early sexual activity or any particular sexual orientation. Some parts of sex and relationship education are compulsory - these are part of the national curriculum for science. Parents can withdraw their children from all other parts of sex and relationship education if they want’
It should be noted that reproduction and human development fall within the science curriculum and hence parents are not able to request that their child is removed from these lessons. If you have any concerns about the content being taught through PSHE or in science lessons please speak to your child’s class teacher, Ms. Taylor (All Through Head of Science) or Ms. England (Assistant Principal- Pastoral Care).
